Write-In Rules Report

Description

Confirms state-by-state rules, where applicable, for submitting a vote for a write-in candidate.

This XML example shows a partial Write-In Rules report.

This table describes the XML elements used in the Write-In Rules report.

XML Element	Description
WriteInRulesyear	The tag for this report; for example, WriteInRules2024.
lastupdated	The date when the report was last updated.
stateWriteInRules	Contains states' rules to submit a vote for a write-in candidate.
Year	Year write-in rules pertain to.
StateNumber	AP State ID. For more information, see State IDs.
State_Code	State postal code.
Write_ins_allowed	Confirms events where write-ins are allowed (for example, GE, Primary).
Write_In_candidate_required_to_pre_file	"YES" or "NO" to confirm if write-in candidate must pre-file.
Pres_Pri_filing_deadline	Candidate pre-filing deadline date for presidential nominating event, where applicable.
State_Pri_filing_deadline	Candidate pre-filing deadline date for state primary, where applicable.
GE_filing_deadline	Candidate pre-filing deadline date for general election, where applicable.
Must_each_county_tabulate_total_write_in_votes_on_Election_Night	"YES" or "NO" to confirm if counties must tabulate write-in totals on Election Night.
If_no_when_do_they_report_total_write_ins	If counties do not have to report total write-ins on Election Night, confirms when that must happen.
When_are_individual_write_in_totals_made_available	Confirms when break-out of write-in candidate votes are made available.
Notes	Additional notes, where applicable, regarding write-in rules.
Citation	State law citation.
