2026 Available Vote Types Report

Description

Not all vote types are available in any particular state or reporting unit (RU). The available data may also change as state rules, regulations and reporting practices evolve.

The 2026 Available Vote Types report (also known as "What's Available Where" report) provides state-by-state and reporting-unit-level vote type availability. For each vote type, the report identifies whether the AP expects to report it in election results, in pre-election advance turnout reporting, and whether it is included in AP expected vote estimates. This version of the report covers all states, includes every reporting unit and contains the most recent update entry for each state.

This report is also available in JSON. For brevity, report examples in the online documentation are provided in XML. In the JSON version, the report metadata object is named VoteTypeAvailability after the XML root element; all other property names are the camelCase of the XML element names (results, advanceTurnout, expectedVote, total, level2, level3); availability flags are true/false; and reporting units are enumerated in full with explicit values, matching the XML.

XML Element	Description
VoteTypeAvailability	The tag for this report.
@GeneratedAt	The date and time (UTC) the report was generated.
@Updated	The date the report data most recently changed (the newest update date across all states)
@Level	The reporting unit depth of the report. Always allRU in this version: every state includes its full set of Level 2 and Level 3 reporting units.
@UpdateHistory	Indicates whether the full update log is included for each state. Always 0 in this version: each state carries its most recent update only.
State	The tag for a particular state. One element per state, in alphabetical order by state name.
@StatePostal	The state postal code.
@StateName	The state name.
@StateID	The state ID.
ReportingUnitCount	The tag for the reporting unit count in the state.
@Total	The total number of reporting units in the state (@Level2 + @Level3).
@Level2	The number of Level 2 reporting units (counties or county equivalents) in the state.
@Level3	The number of Level 3 (sub-county) reporting units. Present only for the six states that report results below the county level.
Notes	General research notes for the state. Optional.
VoteType	The tag for a specific vote type. One element per vote type available in the state; a vote type that does not apply to the state is omitted.
@Type	The vote type name. Possible values are: electionDayInPerson. Votes cast in person on Election Day. advanceInPerson. Votes cast in person before Election Day. absenteeMail. Absentee and mail votes. advanceTotal. The roll-up of advanceInPerson and absenteeMail. provisional. Provisional ballots. avotes. The A-report advance votes as provided by the state; may differ from the advanceTotal value.
@DerivedFrom	The source of the vote type in this state: either the state's own terminology as used in state-published data, or, for the advanceTotal roll-up, the vote type(s) used to calculate it (for example, absenteeMail + advanceInPerson). Optional.
Notes	Research notes for this vote type in this state. Optional.
Availability	The number of reporting units in which AP expects this vote type, by data product. A child element is omitted when the vote type is not expected in that product. Contains one child element per dimension, each carrying the counts split by reporting-unit level. A vote type available statewide shows @Total equal to the state's ReportingUnitCount/@Total; a partial count means availability was confirmed unit by unit, and the per-unit detail appears in the ReportingUnit elements. ExpectedVote always covers every Level 2 unit when present; in the six states with sub-county units, it may or may not also cover Level 3, so its @Level3 presence is meaningful.
Results	Reporting units expected to report this vote type in election results.
@Total	Reporting units covered, always Level2 + Level3.
@Level2	The Level 2 share.
@Level3	The Level 3 share; omitted when zero and for states with no sub-county units.
AdvanceTurnout	Reporting units expected to report this vote type in pre-election advance turnout.
@Total	Reporting units covered, always Level2 + Level3.

ExpectedVote	Reporting units covered by AP expected vote estimates.

ReportingUnit	Represents a reporting unit. Each state includes one element per Level 2 and Level 3 reporting unit in the state.
@ReportingUnitID	The reporting unit ID.
@ReportingUnitName	The reporting unit name.
@Level	The reporting unit level: 2 (county level) or 3 (sub-county).
Results	Election results availability, one attribute per vote type. A value of 1 indicates that AP expects to report this vote type for this reporting unit; a value of 0 indicates that it does not.
AdvanceTurnout	Pre-election advance turnout availability, for the three advance-related vote types: advanceInPerson, absenteeMail and advanceTotal. Values use the same 1/0 convention as the Results element.
LastUpdated	The most recent change to the state’s entry.
@Updated	The date of the update.
@UpdateDetails	A description of the change.
